What is your favorite URL shortener? Mine was tr.im. So, Tr.im is gone. Now what? Well, you have until December 31, 2009 to update tr.im URLs you might have used in blog posts or other items of importance. Now is also a good time to re-evaluate how you use URL shortening. If size does not matter, it is probably in your best interest to use the full URL. Websites practicing good hierarchy will not only have more memorable URLs, but better SEO standings. This is not to say, the website you are linking to will be there in another ten years either.

The recent tr.im news was definitely sad news. I really enjoyed the functionality of tr.im and would like to thank everyone who worked on it for the very nice experience it created. It was well thought out and easy to use. As with any relationship, it is a two-sided deal. Fellow tr.im users and myself are left finding another fish in the sea. I’ll start by watching “500 Days of Summer” again.

When I started writing this blog post, I thought there might be 25 or so other options. I was wrong. There are 100s. Frankly, I’d be willing to pay $25/year membership for one really good one. If this list is a bit overwhelming, Firefox users can use the Shorten URL Add-on for over 100 different options right at your finger tips. While some of the sites the Shorten URL add-on has are listed below, many of its 100 options are in addition to this list.

Although I often rely on twitter to automagically bit.ly my URL’s, I prefer to go local and use idek when not falling back on twitter.

  • Jay at Qii said,

Thank you for listing the URL shortener service at QiCute.com. I appreciate your concern listed above regarding registration and email addresses. The service has the advantage of being able to save and later edit your chosen URL redirect, so it requires some sort of registration in the system. Also, the email registration tends to keep spammers OUT of this URL shortener system. I have only rarely sent out an email in the past year, and all were through Aweber, from which it is easy to unsubscribe. For simple, quick and unimportant URL shortening, another URL shrinker might be better, but for permanent short URLs that you can later edit, QiCute is a nice option. Finally, our URL shortener is part of a group of other web sites that endeavor to maintain our good reputation, so giving out email addresses is simply “unthinkable”. Again, thank you.
