Several months back we updated our t-shirts to state the obvious about our customers. Our newer than new logo (vs. the older than old one) now comes with a short, but sweet trademark, proclaiming one of your many fine attributes, “100% geek”.

Thank you for being the true geeks that you are!

A good-bye to the TV series "Monk"

I realize this post is a few days late, but I have been grieving. Any “Monk” fan knows my deep sadness. On December 4, 2009 “Monk” aired its last episode. Tony Shalhoub is an outstanding actor. Not only did he do an incredible job playing obsessive-compulsive Adrian Monk, but do you remember the show where he played a stage performer while investigating a little “stage knife” incident. That show alone showed the depth in which Tony Shalhoub can spread his acting abilities. There was a lot of talent on that show and I look forward to seeing the actors’ and actresses’ skills put to good use else where.

I must also say, what an excellent job Randy Newman did in writing “It’s a Jungle Out There”. You can watch the YouTube version of “It’s a Jungle Out There”, but I like the thought of buying my own copy to keep in the car, at work and at home for those trying moments of the day. The song is serious, but the melody behind it is upbeat and reminds you not to take life THAT seriously.

In memory of “Monk”, Crazy Like That will be giving away a free OCD Awareness sticker to anyone e-mailing geek@crazylikethat.com with their mailing address by Friday, December 11th. (No worries, we won’t send anything to your e-mail address, unless you specifically ask to be added to our e-newsletter list.)

A huge thank you to everyone who put together the show.

You can find the last few episodes of “Monk” on Hulu.com.

Feel free to comment and express your love for the show, but please don’t post any last episode spoilers. I haven’t watched the last episode yet. I figure I will stash it in my entertainment center and watch it the day before I die.

Dr. Dov Nelkin

As you might have noticed, many of our t-shirt descriptions have recently undergone a face lift. After seeing Dov’s quick wit and humor in one of our online contests, we thought you might enjoy a little bit of his spice added to our product descriptions. For more of his daily wit (and sometimes wisdom), you can follow Dov on Twitter.

Dov’s path to geekdom began with an original IBM PC he inherited when he was 9 years old, but most of his professional life has been spent in other fields. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with majors in English lit and religious studies, back when NCSA Mosaic was the browser of choice and OS/2 was a viable operating system. Just for fun (this was Brown, after all), Dov took the majors’ classes in Computer Science, Econ, Neuro, and, his geeky favorite: Engineering.

Dov then earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, focusing on Bioethics and comparative religious thought and ethics. He has taught undergrad classes (at UVA, Mary Washington, Rutgers), given lectures to physicians, and has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Journal of the Society for Scriptural Reasoning, and served as a founding board member of an academic organization, the Society of Jewish Ethics.

Nowadays, Dov spends most of his time teaching Talmud and Tanakh to students at the high-tech Heschel high school in New York City or relaxing with his wife and three children. He also does freelance writing/editing on topics ranging from technology to religion, and is available to provide lectures on these topics (especially medical ethics) for any educational level.

If you are looking for well-written articles, need someone to write unique blog entries for your website, or want someone to edit and spice up your ad copy, Dov is an eclectic geek for hire. He works really quickly and isn’t satisfied until you are satisfied. You can contact @DrNelk on twitter or at doctor.dov@gmail.com.

We certainly love the work he has done for us!

It wasn't geeky, so it had to go. Free older than old logo t-shirt at CrazyLikeThat.com.

Second Crazy Like That Logo

Crazy Like That is continually evolving. Before we had our really cool Linux terminal style logo using the Inconsolata font, we had an adorable little puppy dog head logo. If you think that was not very geeky, let me present to you the old logo that came before the old logo.

The older than old logo consisted of the letters C L T “cleverly” positioned in an overlapping manner. This image was typically topped off with “CrazyLikeThat.com” in a Minion Pro italic font.

Rick running the Krispy Kreme Challenge sporting the original CLT logo.

Truth be told, the older than old logo was slapped together as fast as possible for the sole purpose of finishing up a logo t-shirt our sponsored runner could wear in the Krispy Kreme Challenge. Nobody wants to see a guy run two miles, eat a dozen donuts and run another two miles all under an hour without wearing a shirt or having something to wipe up his pool of vomit with.

A number of these subtle t-shirts were printed. The medium gray shirt with black printing is great for people that don’t like bright flashy colors. Like the rest of our t-shirts, it is also very comfortable.

The following sizes remain: (Updated as requests come in.)

Medium – 2

Large – 2

4XL -1

Once this piece of “history” is gone, it is gone forever. To get your free t-shirt, email your name, size and complete mailing address to geek@crazylikethat.com. Assuming someone didn’t beat you to it, we’ll have it in the mail to you in no time and you’ll be running marathon races and eating donuts in comfort.

This post is continually updated, so if you still see sizes remaining, you can still get a free shirt!

Substrate meet enzyme.

While pondering days gone by, I realized the current Crazy Like That t-shirts were not my first attempts at geek shirts. My very first design was created for the biochemistry club at NC State University.

The t-shirt sported the title “Biochemistry Life at the Molecular Level.” In the center, I struck up a conversation between a substrate and an enzyme. What would these two say to each other in order to complete the process they are a part of? In the back of my head, I kept hearing Marvin Gaye singing “Let’s get it on”

“Hey, Baby … If you rotate to the right a little, I think we can make something happen!”

Many students seemed to genuinely enjoy the concept, but I somehow doubt many wore it home to see their folks during summer vacation.

Biochemistry Redesign: Enzyme meets Substrate

I decided it is time to bring “Biochemistry: Life at the Molecular Level” to Crazy Like That. This geeky tee will be a bit different than the original. For one, the design is going on the front!

Updated June 1st. Pre-orders are now being accepted for the redesigned biochemistry t-shirt. We added a bit more crispness to the design and chose a Metro Blue Gildan Ultra 100% Pre-shrunk Cotton t-shirt to sport the design.

The death of the Crazy Like That puppy dog logo and the birth of geek.

Second Crazy Like That Logo

Nothing says, “cute” like an adorable, goofy faced dog. As much as I love puppies and anything else with four legs, Crazy Like That’s puppy dog logo did not speak geek.

After spending many hours coming up with logo design alternatives, mostly with mathmatical symbols, I ran my creations past @base10. We both agreed, some were ok, but none of them said, “run with it.” Frustrated and feeling disappointed, we discussed what says geek. @base10 wanted to look at the matter logically. I wanted to pay professionals who knew what the heck they were doing.

Our current italicized Minon Pro font said, “crazy”, but it left out the geek aspect. He suggested we start by updating the text to use the Monaco font, since it has a computer style to it. As he mentioned this, he stared longingly at his terminal window, calling him back to his programming. The terminal glared back and said, “you are such a geek.”

New Logo

Within five minutes, he stepped through the entire process of “what says geek.” We tossed in a couple of dots between words for readability and ta-da, we had something that fit the doctor’s orders.

We hope you enjoy our new logo and would love to hear your thoughts on our choice.

We considered calling it a $5 coupon, but since you have to do something for it, we did not believe that would be fair. Let’s call it what it is … bribery. We want information and you have it.
